The Thatched Bonni by Tess and Alfred Newall

There is something lovely about seeing a Bonni we have made take on a life of its own. We invited decorative artist Tess Newall and cabinet maker Alfred Newall to bring their ideas to our Thatched Bonni, here in our Oxfordshire garden.

We share a love of natural materials, traditional craft and the small details that reveal the hand of the maker. Drawing on heirloom pieces and rural interiors, Tess and Alf have created a cosy dining room that brings together the kind of craft that can only be made slowly, by hand.

Inside, Tess’s decorative painting frames the round window, with embroidered braids and her signature lampshades adding layers of colour, pattern and texture.

Alfred’s handcrafted oak furniture brings the warmth and beauty of the timber into the room, its natural grain sitting beautifully alongside the painted details and woven fabrics. Together, their work offers a fresh expression of time-honoured crafts, making a welcoming place to gather.

We have always wanted our Bonnis to feel like small houses, carefully proportioned and made with natural materials that grow more beautiful with age. Seeing Tess and Alf bring their craft and character to this one has been a real joy. Beneath the thatch, there is now a dining room to enjoy through every season, with as much care in the furnishings as in the Bonni itself.

If you would like to talk about a Bonni of your own or arrange to visit us by appointment, please do get in touch.
